Our first 20K is over!

When Jamie and I first moved here, we made a bucket list. One of the most random items on this bucket list was to run the Brussels 20K race. Why random? Jamie and I don't really run. In fact, we have never even ran a structured 5k or 10k race. Nonetheless, we are both up for a good, sweaty challenge and with all the pun in the world, we were miles away from conquering this one.

With little experience running, little time to prepare and lots of other things to get in the way, we began a training program together. We set our minds to finish what many say is the "Best event in Brussels and/or the best way to see Brussels." Day one found us gasping for breathe after a tenth of a mile. Day two found us wanting to quit. Day three had us questioning our own intelligence. We stuck with it and two months later we both crossed the finish line holding hands.

It took us 3 hours and 46 seconds to finish, but we finished. We didn't give up. We beat a knee injury. We beat flat fleet. We beat the odds. We grew closer and we experienced yet another memory the best way possible.....together.

To our fellow competitors, Tricia, Johnny, Mimi, Jake, Jenna, all of which finished an episode of Survivor before we did, "WE ARE COMING AFTER YOU IN 2012!"

  1. Jenna and I have already talked about coming back to Brussels next May for the run. Yep, we are all sick people for wanting to do something like this twice!
